AI labels (Content Credentials) stay with the image. Pixel watermarks like SynthID need Google's SynthID Detector.

    How it works

    Short answer

To check a file's metadata, drop it above. Photos show their location, camera and date; Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files show author, company, comments and tracked changes; videos show location, phone model and dates. Removing photo metadata is free. Cleaning documents and videos is part of Pro, and every tool has an example you can clean for free.

What metadata does each kind of file hide?

    File What the checker finds
Photos (JPEG, PNG, WebP) GPS location, camera and lens, date taken, editing software, AI labels and embedded prompts
Word, Excel, PowerPoint Author and last editor, company, comments, tracked changes and deleted text, hidden text, hidden sheets and slides
PDF Author, title, creating app, comments, attachments, unapplied redactions, earlier saved versions
Video (MP4, MOV) Location where recording started, phone model, recording date, Content Credentials and AI labels

Each finding is marked by type: Personal for names, places and devices, Hidden for content a reader wouldn't normally see, and AI for labels saying the file was made with AI.

How does the metadata checker work?

It looks at the first bytes of the file to tell what kind it is, then opens the matching checker below: the EXIF viewer for photos, the Word and PDF viewer for documents and the AI video checker for videos. Each one reads only the file's structure on your device. For a folder full of mixed files, the batch cleaner cleans them all at once.

What should you remove before sharing a file?

Location and personal names are the usual leaks: GPS in phone photos and videos, and author or company names in documents. In documents, also look for comments and tracked changes, which can contain text you meant to delete. Keep AI labels and Content Credentials: they tell people how a file was made, and the cleaners leave them in place on purpose.

    Questions

    What is a metadata checker?

A tool that reads the information stored inside a file but not shown when you open it: who made it, when, on what device, and sometimes where. This one works on photos, Office documents, PDFs and videos, and runs entirely in your browser.

    Which files can I check?

JPEG, PNG and WebP photos; Word, Excel and PowerPoint files (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx); PDFs; and MP4, MOV and M4V videos. Older .doc and .xls files aren't supported; save them in the newer format first.

Can I remove the metadata too?

Yes. Photos can be cleaned for free. Cleaning documents and videos is part of Pro, which also cleans many files at once with the batch cleaner. Every tool has an example file you can clean for free to see how it works.

Is it safe to check private files here?

Yes. The file never leaves your device: everything is read and cleaned by your browser. You can turn off your internet connection after the page loads and the checker still works.
