    How it works

    Short answer

A non-breaking space (U+00A0, written   in HTML) looks like a normal space but stops a line from breaking there. Paste your text above and every one is highlighted and replaced with a normal space in the cleaned copy.

Text: characters that take up no space

    ON SCREEN results IN THE FILE r e s u l t s U+200B · 3 bytes · 0 px wide

A zero-width space sits between letters but draws nothing. It can break search, word counts and code, and can be used to mark copied text. Tag characters go further and spell out invisible messages.

    Fixing them in other tools

    • Excel: =SUBSTITUTE(A1, CHAR(160), " ") handles the common one.
    • Word: Find and Replace, search for ^s, replace with a normal space.
    • Code editors: search with the regex .

The checker here handles every type at once and shows you exactly where each one was.

    Questions

    What is a non-breaking space?

A space character (U+00A0) that keeps the words on either side together on one line. Typesetters use it between numbers and units, like 10 kg. In HTML it's written  .

Why are there non-breaking spaces in my text?

They come with text copied from web pages, PDFs, Word documents and many chat or AI apps. Some languages, like French, use them before punctuation as standard.

    What problems do they cause?

Searches and spreadsheet formulas treat them as a different character, so "10 kg" won't match. They also break CSV imports, code and fixed-width layouts.

What other special spaces does this find?

Narrow no-break spaces (U+202F), thin and hair spaces, figure spaces, the ideographic space used in Chinese and Japanese, and the medium mathematical space.
