Read the prompt inside an AI image

Many AI image tools save the full prompt and settings inside the PNG file. Drop one in to read them, or to check what you're about to share.

AI labels (Content Credentials) stay with the image. Pixel watermarks like SynthID need Google's SynthID Detector.

    How it works

    Short answer

Stable Diffusion tools like Automatic1111, Forge and ComfyUI save the prompt, negative prompt, seed, sampler and model inside the PNG file as text. Drop the image above to read them. If the image was re-saved, screenshotted or uploaded to social media, the prompt is usually gone.

    Images: three layers, three answers

Content Credentials signed record of how it was made read · kept Metadata GPS, camera, date, prompts read · removable Pixels where SynthID watermarks live not read here

Metadata is where your location and camera details hide, so that's what the cleaner removes. Content Credentials stay, because removing an AI label would mislead whoever sees the image next.

What a saved prompt looks like

An Automatic1111 or Forge image typically carries a block like this:

a lighthouse at sunset over violet hills, golden hour Negative prompt: blurry, lowres Steps: 28, Sampler: DPM++ 2M, CFG scale: 6.5, Seed: 184402917, Size: 1024x768, Model: example-diffusion-v2

The reader shows that block as found in the file. ComfyUI files contain a full JSON workflow instead. The reader flags it and shows the start of it.

Before you share an AI image

If you sell or post AI art, the prompt inside the file gives away exactly how it was made. Clean the file first: the reader removes the text fields along with any location and camera data, and leaves the pixels untouched. Content Credentials, if there are any, stay attached.

    Questions

Can I get the prompt from any AI image?

Only if the tool saved it and nobody removed it since. Local Stable Diffusion tools usually save it by default. Hosted services such as ChatGPT and Gemini generally don't put your prompt in the downloaded file, though they do add Content Credentials and watermarks.

    Where is the prompt stored?

In a PNG text chunk. Automatic1111 and Forge use a field called parameters. ComfyUI saves the whole node graph in fields called prompt and workflow.

Why would I remove the prompt?

Your prompt can reveal your process, client names, or style tricks you'd rather keep. The clean button removes the prompt and settings and keeps the image unchanged.

Does this work on JPEG or WebP?

Prompts are almost always in PNGs. When a tool writes them into JPEG or WebP metadata as a comment or description, the checker shows those too.
