How to disclose AI use

Short answer

An AI disclosure statement says which AI tools you used, what you used them for, and what you did yourself. A good one names the tool, lists the tasks, says how much of the work came from AI, and confirms you reviewed it. Choose your options above to get a short line, a full statement and, for academic work, APA and MLA citations.

What a good disclosure includes

  1. The tool. Name it: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot or whatever you used.
  2. The task. What it helped with: ideas, outlining, drafting, editing, translation, images or code.
  3. How much. Whether AI shaped a little, some, or most of the final work.
  4. Your part. That you reviewed and edited the output, checked facts, and that the ideas are yours, when they are.

That's all most readers and teachers want. Long apologies or vague phrases like AI may have been used help no one.

Examples

School assignment: AI use: I used ChatGPT for brainstorming ideas and editing and proofreading. I reviewed and edited all of the output.

Work report: In preparing this document, I used Claude to help with summarising sources. Some passages started from AI output, which I then rewrote. I reviewed and edited everything the tool produced and checked the facts and sources myself. I take full responsibility for the content.

Social media: Made with help from AI (Gemini).

Why it matters more now

The big AI companies now watermark their output. Anthropic marks Claude's text worldwide, Google marks Gemini's, and OpenAI has started with ChatGPT in the EU. Those with access to the detectors can tell AI was involved even after editing. Saying so up front is simpler than being found out, and it's what most policies ask for anyway. Questions

Do I need to disclose that I used AI?

Often, yes. Many schools, universities, journals and employers now require it. Under the EU AI Act, AI-generated text published to inform the public on matters of public interest must be disclosed unless a person has reviewed it editorially and takes responsibility for it. When in doubt, disclose.

How do I cite ChatGPT in APA?

APA's format is: OpenAI. (Year). ChatGPT (version or date) [Large language model]. https://chatgpt.com. Choose School or Research paper above and ChatGPT to get it filled in. The same pattern works for Claude (Anthropic), Gemini (Google) and Copilot (Microsoft).

How do I cite ChatGPT in MLA?

MLA describes the prompt as the title: “[Your prompt]” prompt. ChatGPT, OpenAI, date, chatgpt.com. Replace the placeholder with a short description of what you asked.

Where should the statement go?

In a methods or acknowledgements section for papers, at the end of an assignment or report, in the caption or post text for social media, and near the byline or at the end for articles. Follow your school, journal or employer's rules if they have them.

Does disclosing AI use mean I'll lose marks?

Not when AI use is allowed. Policies usually penalise undisclosed use, not honest use. Check your course or workplace policy for what's permitted.
